Untitled Pt 3

She moved back to the chair and set the syringes down on the table. He flinched when he heard her move, but he didn't say anything, his eyes still shut.
Kayla reached out and touched him on the shoulder.
He flinched away from her and made a small noise in his throat. Both his eyes and his mouth stayed shut.
Kayla stood up and walked into the kitchen to get more coffee, then watched him from the distance. She watched as he reached up with one slender hand and felt his eyes then his mouth. He frowned and sat up slowly still with his eyes shut. He shook his wings out slightly, not stretching them out as far as they could go. He opened his eyes, the bright light from the fire made him shut them again.
Kayla walked back into the room and cleared her throat.
He opened his eyes and jumped backwards, his wings knocking a picture to the ground. He flinched as it shattered, and looked at the ground, as if waiting for her to hit him or react angrily.
Kayla just watched him not saying anything.
He was shaking, she could tell he was scared and looked almost like someone beaten him into submission his whole life.
Kayla walked to the broken picture frame knowing she was being watched. She knelt, keeping one eye on him warily, ready to grab the syringe if she needed to. She picked up the broken glass in one hand and placed the glassless frame and picture on the table. He looked at the table and stiffened when he saw the syringes.
"W-who are you?" he asked softly, his voice held fear and confusion.
Kayla was surprised he could speak. She didn't respond for a moment as she threw away the glass.
"I'm Kayla," she said moving to take the chair.
When he flinched backwards away from her she sat warily on the floor.
He swallowed nervously.
"Who are you?" she asked.
He jumped when she spoke to him and then looked at his hands, which were trembling.
He looked up, his eyes looked empty, confused and scared. He shook his head.
"I-I don't know," he whispered.
Kayla frowned.
"Someone always called me something like Experiment 9," he said his voice barely above a whisper.
Kayla frowned deeper.
The guy looked down.
Kayla looked up sharply after a moment, she had been lost in thought. She stood abruptly, making him flinch back.
"Oh Sorry, you must be cold, here," she picked up the clothes and handed them to him. "You can change through there," she said pointing to the bathroom. He ducked his head and rose. He walked uncertainly to the bathroom and shut the door.
Kayla watched him walk away a thoughtful frown still on her face. He walked like he hadn't had much practice and that at every step he could go crashing to the floor.
Kayla looked at her watch as her stomach growled. She stood up and went to the kitchen and started banging around, cooking supper.
A few minutes later the guy came out of the bathroom, eyes wide.
"Hey! They fit, cool," she said.
He nodded. He held the thin pants he had been wearing from the lab in his hand.
"Here, just throw those in the trash, I can go shopping later," she said. He nodded but didn't move.
"Trash is there," Kayla said pointing. He ducked his head and threw the pants away. He stood there and just watched her for a moment before hesitantly picking up a chair and moving it to the kitchen doorway and sitting down, still watching her every move with his deep, almost black eyes. Kayla glanced at him as she worked.
"Do you want me to cut slits in the shirt for your uh, wings, uh, so they can uh," she faltered as she met his eyes. He nodded.
"Okay, give me a moment," she said and put water on to boil. That done she opened a drawer and took out some scissors. She went behind him and he leaned forward. After a moment his wings unfolded and she stepped back with a smile. He looked back at her and a small smile flitted across his face, so faint Kayla wasn't completely sure she saw it.
"Thanks," he said. She nodded. With another glance at his wings, she went back to making dinner. After the water boiled Kayla poured noodles into the water and stirred it.
"What do you want to drink?" Kayla asked a few moments later, not even looking at him as she poured the cooked noodles into a strainer. He shrugged. Kayla turned around then shook her head.
"Sorry, how 'bout water?" she asked, he nodded again. Water is safe, lets hope he isn't allergic to Alfredo, she thought. She dumped the noodles back into the pan and moved it back to the stove and poured the alfredo sauce over it. The guy watched her silently as she moved deftly around the kitchen. Kayla grabbed down two plates and a couple glasses.
"Hungry?" she asked looking at him. He shrugged again. Wow he really isn't one for talking, how awkward. She thought looking at him.
"Alrighty then, if you don't want to eat it, you don't have to," she said serving the plates. She filled the glasses from the tap and set one of the glasses on the counter next to the guy and plunked his plate down next to the glass with a fork in it.
"There you go, enjoy, if you want more there is plenty," she said and leaned up against the counter and started eating. She glanced at him and saw him take the plate into his hands and pick up the fork awkwardly and put some of the food in his mouth. She smiled when he looked in surprise at the food and start eating it faster. Kayla turned around to the stove to get the pepper, for some reason it wasn't there, she frowned and rummaged around in her spice cabinet. She found it there and turned back around with a smile. She looked at the guy and laughed. His plate was empty. He looked up at her.
"I guess I was hungry," he said. Kayla set the pepper down.
"You want more?" she asked. He nodded.
"Thanks," he said. This time Kayla nodded. She liked his voice. It was quiet and calm, she didn't really know how to describe it. It was soothing was really the only way she could think of. But not soothing in a weird ishy sort of way. She shook her head slightly and handed him his plate back and turned back to hers. She ate the last of the food on her plate and stuck it in the sink and set her glass in the sink as well. She sat down on the floor in the kitchen and put her chin in her hands and watched as the guy finished.
