For the rest of the day she couldn't get the young man's face out of her head. She got yelled at many times that day and smacked on the head for getting in the way. At the end of the day she went out into the stairwell and looked down the stairs in the direction of the last floor. She bit her lip wanting to go back down but she was afraid that the grumpy man would be there. She tapped her leg then ran down the stairs to the first floor.
She opened to door quietly and peeked in. She listened, completly silent. She heard nothing. She smiled to herself and let herself all the way in. She went over to the table. The guy was still lying there, but someone had taken him out of the body bag. She could see he still had the strap on his chest, but she could see he also had one around his abdomen. He had an I.V drip going into his arm to give him fluids; so he wouldn't have to be woken and fed, Kayla thought. There were needle marks on his arm where the man was probably experimenting on him. Kayla felt sick, she frowned to herself again. She was suddenly overwhelmed with the desire to take him out of there. She looked around then back at him. She went around the lab looking for a way out so she wouldn't have to carry him up thirteen flights of stairs. Which she was pretty darn sure she wouldn't make it. She found a small door in the way back. It was hidden by a few large boxes. She pushed them out of the way and brushed her hands off. She looked the door over and made sure there were no alarms. After she was sure they wouldn't trip any alarms she went back to where he was lying. She snapped her fingers again to see if he would respond but when he didn't she was releived. It would probably be easier to get him out without him awake. She rummaged through the man's cabinets looking for tranqs. She wanted to be prepared. She went back to the guy and cracked her fingers then scooped him him. One arm under his knees and the other around his shoulders. She felt two strange lumps on his shoulders but dismissed it for now. She carried him to the door and kicked it open. The night air hit them and the guy in her arms shivered. She carried him quickly to her car and laid him in the backseat. She looked around the parking lot but didn't see anyone. This has been to easy. She thought. As if some one had heard her thoughts she heard a loud shout and the sound of something really large breaking. Kayla got into her car quickly and drove out of the parking lot. Her apartment was almost half an hour away. The whole drive she kept looking back at the person lying in the back of her car. As she got further and further away from the lab she was feeling less and less sure that what she did was a good idea. When she got to her apartment she looked at one side of the house where her renter lived. The couple's lights were all off. She breathed out in relief. Kayla went around to the back of her car and eased the guy out. Every time she looked at his face something in the pit of her stomach twisted. She unlocked her door awkwardly with him in her arms then stepped up the stairs, kicking the door shut with her foot. She opened the other door to her apartment and walked though the dinning room/kitchen to the living room. She laid him down on the couch and stepped back looking down at him. She shook her head and went and got scissors and fished the jar of the balm out of her coat pocket. She grabbed a chair and shoved the coffee table to the side and plunked her chair down next to him and set to her work. An hour later she was done meticulously picking the stitches out of his face. She hoped he wasn't blind from the stitches. She looked at the balm in her hand and frowned. She wondered if it would help the wounds on his face. They were fresh wounds but for some reason, they weren't bleeding. They were just holes under his eyes and around his mouth. She unscrewed the cap and carefully spread it on the holes. As she watched the holes slowly disappeared. She shook her head and looked down at the straps around the guys torso. She frowned and loosed them and threw them to the side. She gasped and sat back in her seat. What looked like an edge of a wing showed over his shoulder. She had wondered what the bumps were pressing against her arm, but she hadn't had time to investigate them. She rolled him slightly to the side and saw twin blackish gray wings slightly unfolded from his back. She stood and looked down at him. She saw him shiver slightly and frowned. She didn't know if she had any of her ex-boyfriends clothes still, he had lived there for a bit until he had dumped her. She went to the spare bedroom to check. She found a t-shirt and a pair of jeans. She held them up not know if if they would fit the guy on her couch.
She shrugged and went back into the living room, stopping in the kitchen to get some matches. She laid the clothes on the coffee table and knelt in front of her fire place. (Her apartment came with the fire place for only a little extra cost, which she didn't mind,) She took a couple logs from the wood closet in the wall and stacked them next to the fire place then took some paper. She stacked the logs in the fire and put the paper around the logs. In a few minutes she had a fire started. She went into the kitchen and made some coffee, occasionally she looked into the living room. The guy was still sleeping, his dark hair fell almost to his eyes. His pale skin was illuminated by the fire, he had a slight frown on his face. She poured herself some coffee and stood by the fire place. She completely zoned out in thought for a while. She whirled around when the guy groaned. He stirred but his eyes didn't open. He was completely tense for quite some time, as if expecting something to happen. Kayla walked over to counter to her purse and took out the syringes, she didn't know if he would get violent, she wanted to be prepared.
